Transport mechanisms behind enhanced solute rejection in forward osmosis compared to reverse osmosis mode

چکیده

Forward osmosis (FO) as emerging technology for water treatment was reported to exhibit higher solute rejections compared reverse (RO). In this work, the rejection of two uncharged organic compounds (nicotinamide, caffeine) were investigated first time in low-pressure (LPRO) mode and FO under similar process conditions utilizing same hollow fiber forward membrane modules. consistently showed than LPRO both nicotinamide (FO: 94.8%, LPRO: 85.5%) caffeine 99.9%, 99.2%). To elucidate influence draw on rejection, different salts (NaCl, MgCl2, MgSO4), concentrations, flow rates investigated. A rise concentration increased all (RNaCl:94.1?97.2%,RMgCl2:94.5?97.5%,RMgSO4:90.0?94.7%) indicating an enhancement due presence salt permeate side membrane. Two theories are proposed: While resistance feed transport could be counter-directed flux support layer, driving force diffusion might lowered ionic compound

Forward Osmosis as a Pre-treatment to Reverse Osmosis

This paper presents some aspects of forward osmosis coupled with reverse osmosis using a recirculating draw solution, to produce desalinated water or for dewatering/concentrating a feed stream, with some data provided from a number of operational sites. Many of these aspects are applicable to other osmotic processes and provide an insight into where they may be appropriately considered. A compa...

Rejection mechanisms for contaminants in polymeric reverse osmosis membranes

Despite the success of reverse osmosis (RO) for water purification, the molecular-level physicochemical processes of contaminant rejection are not well understood. Here we carry out non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulations on a model RO membrane to understand the mechanisms of transport and rejection of both ionic and inorganic contaminants in water. While it is commonly presumed t...

Effects of chemical preservation on flux and solute rejection by reverse osmosis membranes

This study investigates the impacts of chemical preservation on the performance of polyamide reverse osmosis membranes with respect to water permeability and solute rejection. Three preservative chemicals, namely formaldehyde, sodium metabisulfite, and 2,2-Dibromo-3-Nitrilopropionamide, were evaluated for membrane preservation at pH 3 and 7. Experimental data show that chemical preservation may...

Dynamics of water and solute transport in polymeric reverse osmosis membranes via molecular dynamics simulations

The Ångström-scale transport characteristics of water and six different solutes, methanol, ethanol, 2propanol, urea, Na+, and Cl-, were studied for a polymeric reverse osmosis (RO) membrane, FT-30, using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulations. Results indicate that water transport increases with an increasing fraction of percolated free volume, or water-accessible open space, in ...
